Botox® Q & A

by Tyler Wayment, MD

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is an injectable treatment used for cosmetic skin care such as smoothing lines and wrinkles in the face. It is a derivative of the natural, purified protein found in Botulinum toxin. The procedure works through injections using a small, thin needle. Each injection is placed into the muscles that rest just beneath the skin. When BOTOX is injected the nerve impulses are blocked and the muscles in the face become relaxed. This works best on the muscles involved in creating frown lines and the lines between the eyebrows. When the activity in these muscles becomes reduced, the skin will become smoother, creating a more natural and relaxed appearance.

Does BOTOX® hurt?

BOTOX® is a non-invasive procedure. When done in an office environment, by a professional, there is no significant pain and no downtime. Most patients of BOTOX® procedures have reported only a small sensation like a pin prick as the ultra-thin needles are injected into the skin is felt. The effects of BOTOX® will start to show in as little as three days and more significant effects are usually seen in about ten days. Results typically last up to three to four months. Continuous treatments are necessary to maintain the effects over time. The approximate number of injections required will vary based on each patient’s individual wants or needs.

What else can BOTOX® treat?

BOTOX® is generally used as a popular treatment for younger, smoother skin. But BOTOX® has also been approved for use in some medical treatments. These types of conditions include:

  • Migraines – BOTOX has been proved safe and effective as an option to help manage chronic migraine pain, prevent headaches, and improve the quality of life.
  • Sweating – BOTOX® can be given as injections to stop pronounced sweating in areas like the armpits, hands, feet, or face.
  • Urinary Incontinence - BOTOX® has been proven to treat urinary incontinence, which is a condition that causes people to have a sudden, uncontrollable urge to pass urine.
  • Twitching - May help stop muscles contracting or twitching when the person doesn't want them to.
