Breast Augmentation Q & A

by Tyler Wayment, MD

What is breast augmentation?

This type of surgery is ideal for patients who want to increase or restore the size of the breasts, and significantly change the shape, using silicone or saline implants. Options for implants can come in many different sizes, shapes, and textures. Breast augmentation is typically performed to enhance a smaller bust, as part of reconstruction following mastectomy, or combined with a breast lift.

What happens during a breast augmentation?

This surgery typically takes up to one hour. The patient will receive general anesthesia to prepare them for the surgery. The doctor makes incisions in the crease of the breast, the armpit, or the surrounding area of the areola. After the surgery is complete, Dr. Wayment will cover the incision with tape and recommend patients wear a surgical bra. Initially breasts are going to feel tight and swollen. Activities should be modified for six weeks. Sutures are removed within seven to ten days.

How long does breast augmentation last?

Most of the time, the results from breast augmentation last a lifetime. However, to ensure results, the implants should be monitored on a regular basis to make sure they’re progressing in the right way. When breast augmentation is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, breast augmentation has a very high success rate. A shapelier, more symmetrical look is attained through breast augmentation.
