Facelift Q & A

by Tyler Wayment, MD

What is a facelift?

A facelift is a cosmetic surgery procedure to correct areas of the face and neck that have diminished through age or injury. Goals of the procedure include:

  • Elevating cheeks
  • Improving the lower face jowls
  • Defining the neck

How is the actual facelift procedure performed?

Dr. Wayment makes an incision above the hairline near the temple, which continues down in front of the ear ending just behind the earlobe. The skin will then be separated from the underlying fat and the fat is trimmed or suctioned away to improve the contour of the face. Then, Dr. Wayment tightens the facial muscles and pulls the skin back and excess skin will be removed if necessary.

Drains may or may not be inserted to collect extra fluid post surgery. Sutures close the incision, and metal staples reattach the skin to the scalp. The surgery, usually performed on an outpatient basis, usually lasts four to six hours. You may see swelling or bruising anywhere from two weeks to a month after the surgery.

What is a mid facelift?

A mid facelift focuses on the upper cheek and lower eyelid areas of the face. Using minimal incisions to the hairline, Dr. Wayment raises sagging cheek tissues, giving off a more youthful appearance to the cheekbones. An added benefit will be a reduction to the laugh lines around the mouth. This procedure may be performed in combination with an endoscopic forehead lift.
