Tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a surgical technique used to remove excess skin and fat on the abdomen that develops after pregnancy, obesity, or with age. During a full tummy tuck procedure, the abdominal muscles, which have become stretched or lost elasticity are tightened. Patients who are in fair health, with no pre-existing medical conditions, are good candidates for a tummy tuck.
The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for a tummy tuck would be to discuss your goals with Dr. Wayment. During a consultation, he will review what you are looking to achieve through tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Wayment may also give you a physical exam to make sure you are in optimum health with no pre-existing conditions. At this consultation, you’ll also have a chance to look at before-and-after photos of other tummy tuck patients to measure the results.
There are many ways to perform a tummy tuck based on how much tissue Dr. Wayment is removing and the shape and placement of the incision. Dr. Wayment uses what’s called “High Lateral Tension.” This type of technique rejuvenates the abdomen, lower trunk, and upper thighs while at the same time allows liposuction of the abdomen and waistline. The incision runs along the bikini line. The surgery usually lasts three to four hours.
Drains are placed during surgery to collect excess fluid that may accumulate post surgery. Dr. Wayment will remove sutures within two weeks of surgery and the patient can expect to wear a compression garment for six weeks. Drains are usually removed five to seven days after surgery, or once drainage has subsided. Patients should expect to modify activities for at least six weeks.
